Thailand might be famous for its temples, gorgeous beaches, and massages but it is much more than that. It is such a diverse country.
The itinerary that I proposed can be done by motorcycle, train, bus and by plane, so we have plenty of options.
This journey starts in the North in the city of Chiang Mai and ends in the South, in the Phi Phi Islands. As a base, we will use Chiang Mai, (Chiang Rai), Bangkok and Phi Phi Islands.
If we feel like it, we can add a short stopover in Siemp Read, Cambodia. I will explain further later on.
On average we will spend 3 days in each base.
Once in Chiang Mai, we can do many different activities:
Jungle trekking to stay with a Hill Tribe. These excursions might take several days so count on adding 3-4 days to your itinerary.
Visit the Karen Tribe, best known for the neck rings worn by their women.
Visit an Elephant Sanctuary.
Attend
Etc.
There is no need to book ahead in your home country. The easiest thing to do is to wander around, compare prices for both bikes or tours. Thailand is an extremely touristic country so you do not need to worry too much. You will find many many many options once you arrive in the country. There are tourism stands literally everywhere.
If possible, visit Chiang Mai during the Loy Kathrong or Lantern Festival. Prices rise but it is an amazing experience.
From Chiang Mai, we can head to Chiang Rai to spend one or several days. My recommendation is to head to the Golden Triangle, called so as it is where three countries meet: Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand.
Next, we head South, to Bangkok. If you love trains as much as I do you might take the sleeper train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. Nevertheless, you must buy these tickets well in advance as they sold out fast.
Using Bangkok as a base we can do several day trips. My recommendations are:
Ayutthaya.
Damnoen Saduak Ratchaburi or floating market
Maeklong Railway Market.
From the Thai capital, we can take a bus or plane to Siem Reap, Cambodia, as a short stopover to visit the Angkor temples, the biggest religious complex in the world. An archaeological and historical treasure more well-known in the West as the place where Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie was filmed.
Our next destination are the Phi Phi Islands. To enjoy them to the fullest, we can go during the Full Moon or Half-Moon parties.
As a day trip, we can take a boat to Monkey Island (the name is self-explanatory), and snorkel close to the beach where the movie The Beach with Leonardo Dicaprio was filmed.
Despite the size of the Island, Phi Phi has many entertaining options: pool and beach parties, Muay Thai bars, cinema bars and so on.
Finally, we can go back to Bangkok, where we can fly to other destinations within and outside of Asia.
